NLP Meta Model -
What is Complex Equivalence?

Complex Equivalences in Model of NLP reflects the beliefs that the person has as a result of his or her own interpretations of experiences.

Complex Equivalence is a language pattern which reflects a person has related or equated two experiences together although they may not be related.
Hence, this results as being a filter to perceive a reality which isn’t from an objective lens.
There is a tendency to relate things that may not be logical, but they seem genuine.
Usually, this kind of reasoning of complex equivalence, is very common among people.
In fact, they are also the cognitive shortcuts that we use to look at the world as if it was through our own lenses.

Example of Complex Equivalence

It can come across as a generalisation.
Example: "If they do not make eye contact with me when I’m speaking to them, they are not interested in me.”
That would be a pretty logical inference, but if we take a step back and really observe the big picture, that's simply not true.
Perhaps this individual is shy or distracted, or perhaps they are concentrating on something else.
Thoughts and feelings are frequently based on complex equivalencies.
They influence our perception of reality and are a component of our internal model of the universe.

Limiting Beliefs

In essence, when someone uses a complex equivalence, they are stating that ‘A=B’.
These ideas could become limiting beliefs or enhancing beliefs.

Limiting beliefs often hamper an individual from achieving their highest potential. These lead us to draw unhelpful conclusions that affect our behaviours and emotions.

Counter Example

Counter examples is a method of challenging these beliefs by presenting facts where these assumptions are false and are employed to interrupt this loop.

(Counter example is a method of challenging beliefs and is a part of the topic – ‘Sleight of Mouth’ which is taught in NLP Training Courses.)

Example of Counter Example

Even before challenging their limiting belief, we can us Meta Model questions to understand the trigger point of an individual.
When we chunk down through meta model and then give counter-examples, it becomes even more powerful.

When someone assumes, for instance, "She didn't call me back so she mustn't care about me," they are likely making a mistaken inference of some kind in this instance.
We can refute such reasoning with a few counter examples.
A counter-example might be, for instance, "Recall an instance when you couldn’t answer someone's call. Did you imply that you had no affection for them?”

Hence, this helps the individual to realise that their beliefs might not always be accurate.

Another example would be, "My partner doesn't love me because they don't show affection in public."
A counter-example that would be helpful here is, "Is it really true that only people who show affection publicly love their partners?

Benefits of Counter Example

It has been observed that challenging these kinds of mental shortcuts creates room for other ways of thinking.
It encourages healthier, more adaptable ways of seeing the world and interrupts the loop of limiting beliefs.

Inquiries begin, and different explanations are explored to rewire the minds to cease making quick judgments that may not be accurate overall.
